Monty Python: Little Red Riding Hood

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/n4XNkmTe0Qw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/n4XNkmTe0Qw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Monty Python now has a YouTube channel and they are uploading some cool stuff. You should subscribe. 2 1/2 minutes of every day seems a small sacrifice for your sanity. This is amazing filmmaking. Check it out!

Spoiler Alert: I love the completely authentic wolf costume and when the hands come in to "reset" the wolf it makes me laugh out loud. Love entire production design and Grandma's house is exactly right.

Doug and Katie visit NY

Doug and Katie spent five days with us recently and this is a typical view of one of our favorite power couples. Especially in NY, it's lovely to have old friends arrive and take in the atmosphere to help remind you of how great a city this is. Besides the Highline, we walked around a lot as usual and had great early Fall weather. Doug took Katie to a lot of old haunts like the Corner Bistro and Great Jones for food at night and took care of business during the day while attending the Filmmakers Conference at FIT. We attended this "market" in NYC in 1995 with a documentary project and Doug was here similarly to raise finishing funds for "The Singularity", his new film. The screening itself was a little bit of a disappointment because it was a in a bunker instead of at the Angelika Film Center downtown on Houston St (a real theater). The Independent Feature Project that's behind the IFC film channel puts on this market, but Doug was appropriately disappointed with some of the turnout and subsequent events. The best thing was seeing Doug and Katie together and so happy and to see how well he is getting reception for the film. PBS was terrific at the meetings and may help with needed connections to gain financing (we are holding our breath). Events like this can be great, but the IFP has lost a lot of support during the last few years and it shows in this event. One of my former students, Miao Wang was also at the market with her feature documentary, Beijing Taxi so it will be interesting to see progress on that front as well.

The Kids are All Right the Book : Interview tomorrow at 11am on NPR

My friend from middle school, Liz Welch and her siblings have written a memoir of their childhoods in Bedford, NY. Liz and I reunited a few years ago at a book signing of our friend, the writer and Veteran, Dan Fahey. Liz was one of those very popular girls in middle school and highschool, but I left for boarding school and missed out on much of the gossip. Check it out and I certainly will be tuning-in. Break a leg at all of your events Liz!

Should be a fun Saturday! We are signed up for the Highline Hunt at 11am and then the Kitchen Block Party from 12-5pm should be a blast too. We have attended before and they always have cool musical events and stuff for kids. I personally love their t-shirts as well. Since we are yards from the Highline, we love these free events. It's a great way to get out and see friends in the neighborhood.
That's what I love about living in Manhattan these days too. My network of friends in the neighborhood really come to my aid when I am in need. Last week, I needed help because I had an emergency dentist appointment (don't ask) and my friend Susan Hamburger watched the kids when my sitter was unavailable. It was lovely that the kids had a good time and I was relaxed knowing how great Susan is with the little people, (our girls share a birthday so it's extra special). Susan is an extremely talented lighting designer so check out her work. She focuses on dance, but does a range of other projects too. I feel so lucky to have a group of people close by with common interests. Come join the party downtown tomorrow!

Winemouse REMIX

I saw this and was fascinated. You can see the original and hear all the dialogue if you search for it, but I prefer to watch it this way. revolucian did the Christian Bale remix last Spring when the actor was interrupted by a lighting guy during a set-up for Terminator: Salvation, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTihsJQHt48
Interesting work. Love seeing this winehouse footage. So creepy yet intriguing.

Secrets: Flickr "from Yahoo"

Now Flickr has added the fated "Yahoo" logo to it's home pages. Arrrgh. I love using Flickr, as it was the first real social networking I ever got into years ago. On the homepage of the Flickr site you have only ever gotten a tiny Yahoo on the lower right, so not as noticeable. But now, it's on the top, right next to the name, "Flickr - from Yahoo".

My personal experience with huge conglomerates and good ideas is that it never turns out well. I know that the Flickr folks from Canada were swallowed up by Yahoo years ago and their offices are in the Yahoo office in North Beach in San Francisco, but I really don't like seeing the little logo on there.

A few years back, Zachary and I approached Flickr with an idea to develop a gallery where you could come in off the street and see the best of Flickr photography in large prints and monitors. It culminated in a 24 Hrs of Flickr Meet-Up event that we organized in the West Chelsea Gallery district of Manhattan. The party, which cost $30,000 was a huge success with write-up's in New York Magazine and CNET, but after that they lost interest in funding the gallery project. The state of the economy and Yahoo's stock price was part of the problem with continuing....

The best part of the experience was having a drink with George Oates http://www.flickr.com/people/george/ and http://abitofgeorge.com/as she was definitely the most excited about our project. Her passion about photography was infectious and her enthusiasm for the gallery was lovely to hear after flying ourselves to San Francisco to present our idea to the Flickr powers in charge.

I still love the Flickr family I am a part of, but am afraid of seeing that little logo......Hope Flickr doesn't change. I found this photo series by tripping around and really like the darkness of this one.

Philip Bloom » Sugar Cane, Canon 7d slow motion

I discovered Phillip Bloom's blog months ago when I saw "Sofia's People", a low light, Canon 5D MK2 camera test and loved what I saw. Now he has some tests up of shooting slow motion with the Canon 7D, that are cool but since it is only 60p, it needs to be slower I think to really have an impact. Check it out. I love the slow motion with the Sony CX100, but this is cool as well. The problem with the Sony is the limited time, only 3 seconds when slowed down =12 seconds. Could hinder some extended production while the 7D has more time. Would like to see the stuff slower, and since the people aren't doing much, the best shot is at the end with the water on the last guy's head. The interesting thing is we are now seeing more high quality looking video on these digital SLR camera that even encompasses slow motion. Nice to look at.

California Video (Getty Center Exhibitions)

Just found the archive for the Getty Museum in LA. My old boss, Skip Sweeney, a video artist and documentary filmmaker from San Francisco has some work in this exhibition from 2008. Check out his clip in the show as it's completely ahead of it's time in showing early split screen video. Besides that, his site is revolutionary as he provides live streaming feedback, 24/7 at http://videofreeamerica.com/site/

There is a lot to build on in knowing about our video past. I learned a tremendous amount from watching Skip at work. Besides his talent for capturing San Francisco current events from the 1970's like drug busts in Golden Gate Park to following heroin addicted Carel and Ferd (which I caught at MOMA this winter), Skip was there with a camera on his shoulder (it was so big back then.....). His feedback is mesmerizing and it's always nice to take a break and just relax.

Besides Skip, the archive is extremely engaging. Look at Jay McCafferty's self portrait while shaving. Fascinating.

Magnum Photos: Bronze sculpture downtown 9/11

I was reminded of this photo recently because of a photo I took of my daughter two weeks ago downtown near the WTC site http://www.flickr.com/photos/knz/3899077782/

I wish I could see this one a little bigger, but the photo is amazing because it really looks like someone, like my Dad maybe, looking into his briefcase while sitting on a bench, all within chaos.

Wild that 8 years have gone by for us people who live downtown and those in the world. It's a really a changed city now in some respects. But from this I was hunting around the Magnum site and there are some really nice videos on there, cool! I started watching this one http://inmotion.magnumphotos.com/essay/short-interview-bruce-gilden and loved hearing the photographer's voice and seeing him with his cat. Priceless video really. Loved hearing how he uses the flash and seeing the prints of his favorites from Coney Island and elsewhere. Nice discovery of how the mind and the internet work to help us discover new things.

Four Singularity Movies - The World Wants the Future | Singularity Hub

Helping my friend Doug Wolens on editing his new documentary "The Singularity" for the IFP Filmmaker Conference http://conference.ifp.org/filmmaker_conference/ in NYC next week. It's on a range of issues that I have little knowledge of so is doubly intriguing. He's meeting with a bunch of interested parties like Sundance, PBS, HBO and some foreign distributors based on his reputation from making "Butterfly" http://butterflyfilm.net/ a few years back. We will be at the A&E Luncheon next Tuesday 9/22 so that should be fun too.

Jim Henson's Resident Evil 5 by Black 20

</object>

I really enjoy the work that Black20 does and this recent trailer is so funny. They are friends, old colleagues from NBC Universal and are always coming up with smart ideas to do on video. Think their "My LIttle Pony" trailer  is brilliant as well. They use the medium well, always utilize fun digital effects and always leave me wanting more. Check out some of their classics:

MichelGondry.com

Check out his exceptional site. Neato portrait of the week slide show at the bottom hits the spot too.......Think it is so funny that he is selling out-dated calendars from 'The Science of Sleep' too. This guys is brilliant. Additionally, just found out that my friend Vincent Cauche attended a dinner party in Paris years ago where he was a guest and marveled at his energy and ability to "direct" the attention of the guests. I think he even said some magic was performed. Cool.

Wild Beasts: 'All the King's Men'

</object>

Nothing to be said, but watch this one. Nicely executed video; cool song, amazing vocals and camera work with lots that gets you thinking and dreaming. Effervescent. The art direction on this video is supreme filmmaking. The slow-motion, that I am loving these days is wonderfully done so it most likely was shot that way. It's the combination of the dusk light, the women in silhouette and the period costumes that make it stand out as interesting.  The combination of shots and vocals really brings out the talent of the band too. Weirdness abounds in this one.

Domino records is the one label out there that is introducing me to some amazing new bands.

The little shopkeeper on Flickr: Abhinav Vats

One of my friends on Flickr sent me this photo. He is an amazing photographer and always sends me photos that make me take a second look. I love his passion for photography, his descriptions and the notes he sends along. Check out his photo-stream. It's inspiring. http://www.flickr.com/photos/abhinavv/

I am a Flickr addict because of the people I meet and places I get to go virtually, through this interface. I have learned so much about photography by participating in this environment. .AV. is one of those people who I enjoy hearing from. His images and knowledge of this world fascinates me. Abhinav Vats is his name.

Lou Barlow: 'Take Advantage' music video and Inco Matsui

</object>

Lou Barlow has a new video up on YouTube. Like it. It's cute. The best shot is the one where he helps his friend up and he chimes in so nicely in the chorus. Like hearing that amazing voice and seeing what looks like Lou's house. Personal and real. Nice mellow feel that continues through album. Merge records is releasing a new video every week so you can see it on LOOTUBE, http://www.mergerecords.com/lootube/ as well as on YouTube. Can't wait for next week!   He is also playing in NYC on October 6 http://loobiecore.com/newtour.html so if you're a fan, come on out.

Our progress on the video for Lou is coming along nicely. Inco is finished with most of the figures (the band and Natalie) so now she is working on the drum kit and Lou's guitar.  After that,  the shooting begins. Inco just installed another of her works in the Royale cupcake shop on 6th Avenue near West 11th St in Greenwich Village. Here is a photo of some of the piece close up and of Inco in the window during installation. Check out the detail of the woman behind the counter and the coffee-maker and stuff on the shelf behind the counter. Her attention to detail is wild. I wish I lived in one of these little world's for just an hour. So pure.

MYTH.com by Suza Scalora - The Fairies, Witches and Wizards of Oberin, Evidence Of Angels

My friend Suza Scalora has a new book coming out! On September 29th, she's releasing her new photography book and this one is transcendental. Called Evidence of Angels, it's beautiful and starts with a heartfelt story of a lost companion. Check out her fan page on facebook and help spread the word, http://www.facebook.com/pages/EVIDENCE-OF-ANGELS/131751563551

Suza's photographs are luminescent and her work takes you to another time and place. Check out the wallpaper and astral projections in Cool Stuff too. I love Suza's sense of humor and eye for the fantastical. Doesn't everyone need a little fantasy in their life these days?

Champagne Valentine joins Nexus | Creativity Online

Geoff Lillemon
Geoff Lillemon

Digital creative boutique Champagne Valentine, founded by Geoff Lillemon and Anita Fontaine, has signed to Nexus for commercials representation. CV was behind the vibrant interactive music video for The Never Ending Why for Placebo.

Extremely interesting that a small studio gets commercial representation now in the world of today's advertising and online marketing paradigm. Checked out their site and show reel. Wow! Loved what I saw. Such interesting people doing dynamic things with video and Flash. Fontaine and Lillemon definitely have a vision that is in demand. Will keep my eyes out and yes, I am inspired. http://www.champagnevalentine.com/

Arctic Monkeys video: Crying Lightning

</object>

This video is so cool. The way they made this little boat and shot the band in it is wonderful. The green screen of this video is remarkably undetectable and well, perfect for all the action
they needed the band to be doing throughout. Love the lights on the boat's mast and when the "rock god band" comes out of the sea, the expressions on the band's faces are priceless. I
think Domino is doing some pretty amazing promotion of their bands these days by making some fabulous music videos.

LA Fire footage

</object>

Wow! This is some amazing footage and the key to this reporting, is that we can see from multiple locations what this fire really looks like instead of getting a glimpse of this on CNN or the local California news-stations.  The first YOUTUBE clip was also taken by a Canon EOS 20D, which is not a video camera, but a Digital SLR.  In the second clip, I love seeing 24 hours
compressed into minutes as you can see the fire-line's frightening progress. In general, this footage is incredible to look at and helpful to see so many interested citizen journalists out
there.

I met Spencer years ago at the premiere of my good friend's film, "Butterfly" about Julia Butterfly Hill who camped out in a redwood tree in Northern California for 2 years (Zachary edited that film). Spencer is raising awareness about climate change by photographing 600 people two weeks ago in Switzerland. Here is some info.
