Doug and Katie visit NY

Doug and Katie spent five days with us recently and this is a typical view of one of our favorite power couples. Especially in NY, it's lovely to have old friends arrive and take in the atmosphere to help remind you of how great a city this is. Besides the Highline, we walked around a lot as usual and had great early Fall weather. Doug took Katie to a lot of old haunts like the Corner Bistro and Great Jones for food at night and took care of business during the day while attending the Filmmakers Conference at FIT. We attended this "market" in NYC in 1995 with a documentary project and Doug was here similarly to raise finishing funds for "The Singularity", his new film. The screening itself was a little bit of a disappointment because it was a in a bunker instead of at the Angelika Film Center downtown on Houston St (a real theater). The Independent Feature Project that's behind the IFC film channel puts on this market, but Doug was appropriately disappointed with some of the turnout and subsequent events. The best thing was seeing Doug and Katie together and so happy and to see how well he is getting reception for the film. PBS was terrific at the meetings and may help with needed connections to gain financing (we are holding our breath). Events like this can be great, but the IFP has lost a lot of support during the last few years and it shows in this event. One of my former students, Miao Wang was also at the market with her feature documentary, Beijing Taxi so it will be interesting to see progress on that front as well.
