Now Flickr has added the fated "Yahoo" logo to it's home pages. Arrrgh. I love using Flickr, as it was the first real social networking I ever got into years ago. On the homepage of the Flickr site you have only ever gotten a tiny Yahoo on the lower right, so not as noticeable. But now, it's on the top, right next to the name, "Flickr - from Yahoo".
My personal experience with huge conglomerates and good ideas is that it never turns out well. I know that the Flickr folks from Canada were swallowed up by Yahoo years ago and their offices are in the Yahoo office in North Beach in San Francisco, but I really don't like seeing the little logo on there.
A few years back, Zachary and I approached Flickr with an idea to develop a gallery where you could come in off the street and see the best of Flickr photography in large prints and monitors. It culminated in a 24 Hrs of Flickr Meet-Up event that we organized in the West Chelsea Gallery district of Manhattan. The party, which cost $30,000 was a huge success with write-up's in New York Magazine and CNET, but after that they lost interest in funding the gallery project. The state of the economy and Yahoo's stock price was part of the problem with continuing....
The best part of the experience was having a drink with George Oates http://www.flickr.com/people/george/ and http://abitofgeorge.com/as she was definitely the most excited about our project. Her passion about photography was infectious and her enthusiasm for the gallery was lovely to hear after flying ourselves to San Francisco to present our idea to the Flickr powers in charge.
I still love the Flickr family I am a part of, but am afraid of seeing that little logo......Hope Flickr doesn't change. I found this photo series by tripping around and really like the darkness of this one.
