Video: When Harold Met Erica : The New Yorker

I liked this video a lot. Liked its simplicity and the lovely monochromatic graphic element. Also, I liked how it reminded me about love and how finding the right partner can make all the difference in yours and your childrens' lives. Poignant and sweet.

ready for action | Flickr

Almost three. Looks like a combo of my two brothers, my Dad and Zachary all rolled up into one squeezable package. He is starting to put full sentences together, still loves marine life and his girlfriend, Smith.

We just finished this new video for Zagat so check it out. The voice is our old friend from NBC, Mike Weingartner and I think it moves along nicely. They wanted a tour of the new features on the site and the coolest thing I think is how we demonstrate the map features from :27-:37 seconds in. The 3D look and feel came out well as it just gives the video a little polish and pizazz. You can see the little drawing that Michel Gondry did of Zachary in there at Marvin H's thumbnail at 1:35 on the right and a little photo of Natalie in sunglasses for Yasmeen K's thumbnail directly above. We highlighted Mario Batali as one of the examples of an excellent chef in NYC (Zachary edited the PBS series, "Spain on the Road Again" with Batali and Gwyneth Paltrow a few years ago) and also showed some good eating spots in Chelsea. My brother-in-law, Clint did the sound mix and we used a track from Killer Tracks. In general, I like the piece because it moves along and shows their updated site nicely.

A Year at War - Interactive Feature

This is some great video from the NY Times. Like the photography and the interviews of the soldiers and their families. Wonder how this "instant communication" is changing the soldiers' lives. Like seeing the Skype material and the kids running around in the background while their parents are monitoring their growth and development. Can tell they are using DSLR's as the clean focus on their subject really make the characters pop.

the People moved the Country | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Love this photo. So telling and while no women seem to be present in the foreground, you can see some in veils in the background of this circle. I found a number of interesting photos of the dramatic events from Friday and the weekend on Flickr by typing in El Tahrir Square as there are some excellent recent photos from people who are there. http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=El+Tahrir+Square&page=3

I also have liked the Guardian's coverage as they have a running blog that updates every minute with text, twitter posts, photos and even some audio coverage from Chris McGreal from this morning that I really liked listening to:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/blog/2011/feb/13/egypt-transition

go a long ways down on the page to find it and listen.

Have been to Cairo myself in 2000 and very interested to return some day to this revitalized city and country. I'm also very glad that I can see material from people there on the ground. Know my brother in Palestine and my friends in Jordan will be interesting to talk to about their perspectives on all this.

Consumer Innovation as New Economic Pattern: NY Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/10/arts/10innovative.html

I really enjoyed this article by Patricia Cohen from the NY Times as it brought me to the video I pasted in below about a guy who build his own scanner.  He described the process in detail that was kind of "inside baseball" but fascinating as he's giving the DIY process away and telling how it is possible to do this with a little programming prowess, some ingenuity and a lot of creative energy and collaboration.  He talks about the people in the process as that is the most important element of where good ideas come from. The video is nothing special and the beginning is a little annoying as the shooter is getting into position but has the camera running.

But Cohen's article is interesting because she talks about producers and innovators as being essential to the process of developing good ideas. Now, this is not just in creating entirely new things, but modifying existing material and "things"for the better of society and often fun.  It reminded me of my friend Jeff Taylor, who showed some Super-8 film at a party of early snowboarding in Utah where they lashed longboards to their boots and careened down the slopes in the 1980's.

Great Blue Heron on Vimeo

Just a taste of warmer weather to come.......

I shot this over the summer at the farm on a steamy morning in July. It's extremely short, just 15 seconds and turn up the volume too so you can hear the ambience. This was an out-take from "Olivia Bouler: 11 and Willing to Help" which is still getting great hits on YouTube. I wanted this clip at the end of the film where the the link to the Audubon Society would go. Unfortunately, it didn't make the film, so here is a little taste.

Year of the Rabbit on Vimeo

Very nice short film that uses beautiful monochromatic animation to welcome us to the year of the rabbit. I have always liked rabbits and know this year is already shaping up to be particularly busy and fruitful. Happy Year of the Rabbit everyone!

James Franco Explains That Photo of Him Sleeping in Class [VIDEO] | The New York Observer

This is old but I still liked watching it as I think it's hilarious.

I think it's revealing and he's in a cool mood when he's talking about his career as a student, getting a D in his acting class and the photo of him sleeping "in class". Obviously, the hype about James Franco is at an all-time high because of his being nominated for an Oscar for 127 Hours (The film also has been nominated for Best Picture and Best Editing). I think this little clip was shot with a digital SLR camera as the zoom-in's etc and sound make me think of our camera and the usability issues of shooting hand-held. I like the color and how nicely saturated it is. I put the trailer below too so you can check it out. I'm really interested to see this film.

Classic sidecar race with my friends Erik and Heather on a BMW R75/5

My friend Erik Green and his wife Heather can be seen in the lead of this classic sidecar race that took place this past 10/10/10 at the Barber Vintage Celebration. They are in the red rig our front for all of the race.

Erik Green is an accomplished racer with a past filled with triumphs, most of them with Team Obsolete, but I was most impressed with seeing his wife Heather here literally laid out on the track, in perfect alignment with Erik's riding.

Check them both out from a helmet camera from a following bike at:

1:10-1:59

2:00-2:45 Here you can see Heather get herself to the other side at both the start and end of this section. Amazing. Watch Erik lean into the curves here too.

3:08-4:10 They go through a tight turn at 3:11and the following bike is really close so you can see how they work together.

You can see their competition at 7:56-8:07 as their sidecar person is literally dragging their kevlar suit on the track as the dust coming from ahead attests. Intense......

Now these sidecars are really just platforms where the rider can brace his or her body to really lean into the force of the turn. Erik of course won this race and answered my questions about what kind of bike this is:

"Its a BMW R75/5 base racer built in the early 90's. The quality of the
original video is even better. I want to get one of those cameras.
Average speed for the lap is around 70 mph so straightaway speed is
somewhere in the 90's."

Wow. If you want to see a photo of the bike they were racing you can go to Erik's company, Works Engineering. I love hearing the sound of the bikes too.
